Bude is an ideal location for all types of paddlesport. We use the sea, the surf, our canal and local rivers to run a wide variety of courses. Kayaking and Canoeing cover a huge range of activities and we have both the locations and the coaching skills to cover many of these.
The rugged Cornish Coastline, with its isolated harbours and estuaries, provides a variety of Sea Kayaking opportunities. Half day and day trips can be organised to suit a variety of abilities with BCU star awards available for more experienced paddlers.
The Beaches both in and around Bude are perfect for Surf Kayaking, a sport which has both its history and some of the best paddlers in the world located in this very town. Within our team we can boast our own former World champion in Simon Hammond, author of Surf Kayaking The Essential Guide and BCU level 5 coach. Together we run surf kayaking courses from beginners up to international team training with all the BCU surf awards available.
Bude's other main paddling area is its scenic and historic rural canal which weaves up the Neat Valley for almost two miles. This canal provides the perfect place to teach kayaking and canoeing techniques in a safe and sheltered environment. We use the canal for a variety of kayaking and canoeing courses. Courses cater for beginners through to BCU star awards and safety tests as well as coach education training and assessments.
And our final locations are the various white water rivers running off the moors of Cornwall and Devon. The river Dart in particular offers an exceptional range of white water obstacles and challenges. We use these rivers to both introduce paddlers to white water as well as running BCU star training and assessments.

If you've never kayaked or canoed before we'd recommend you start with a session or two on the Bude canal where we can provide you with a good foundation of skills. This will allow you to then enjoy the more advanced environments in a safe way.
We can accommodate a wide range of ages across the many kayaking and canoeing activities but we'd recommend the following minimum ages based on the strength and endurance required for each activity :
Canal based Canoeing (with up to 4 people per boat) minimum age 8.
Canal based kayaking minimum age 8.
Sea Kayaking minimum age 12.
Surf Kayaking minimum age 12.
White Water Kayaking minimum age 12.
Sea, Surf and White Water Kayaking are all physically demanding sports and in some conditions minimum aged paddlers will struggle. Beginners courses in these activities require paddlers to have some basic technical and safety skills which are best acquired by taking part in flat water kayaking activities first. Please be honest with our team about your capabilities when making a booking and during an activity as this will effect both the safety and quality of the session. Please go to the specific pages for more detailed information on each of these advanced activities.
We provide all the equipment and outer clothing for your sea kayaking activity, all you need to bring along is a change of clothing (see suggestions below) and sufficient food and drink if taking part in a full day trip. We will provide water proof cags, spray decks, dry bags and buoyancy aids as well as the boats and paddles.
Clothing to wear for this activity :
Summer conditions - tracksuit bottoms or shorts, T-shirt and an old pair of trainers or wetsuit boots.
Winter conditions - tracksuit bottoms, waterproof over trousers, T-shirt, Fleece, wooly hat and an old pair of trainers or wetsuit boots.
Alternatives - A full wetsuit can be used for kayaking and canoeing but it can prove to be too hot and restrictive and may cause rubbing.
For more advanced courses paddlers often bring their own equipment and clothing. We do have a fleet of specialist sea kayaks, surf kayaks and white water kayaks which are used on various courses as required.
